Michael Biehl is the former Vice Chair and CFO of KPMG and a recognized authority in taxation and private equity. With over 30 years of leadership experience, he has advised global businesses and executive teams on complex transformations, cross-border M&A transactions, and strategic growth initiatives.
Mr. Biehl career spans senior roles across professional services, international tax, and private equity, where he has consistently guided organizations through high-stakes financial, operational, and governance challenges.
At KPMG, Mike was a founding member and Global Lead Partner for Private Equity, where he built and scaled the practice from $300M to $1.5B in revenue. He oversaw more than 1,000 client engagements across 63 countries, leading global teams and partnering with executive leadership to develop service strategies that fueled growth. Known for his ability to drive transformation, Mike helped turn underperforming business units into thriving operations through innovative client service investments.
Mike was frequently called upon by KPMG leadership to lead through crisis and turnaround situations. As Vice Chair and CFO, he directed the firm’s financial strategy during a period of government monitoring and operational challenges, achieving $2B in growth. Earlier, he stabilized the Southeast Region Tax Practice amid heightened regulatory oversight and transformed the Connecticut Tax unit from the lowest-performing into the second most profitable in the U.S.
Over the course of his career, Mike has led multidisciplinary teams serving Fortune 500 companies on complex global tax and business issues. He began his career at KPMG supporting international investors in the U.S. real estate market and went on to establish the firm’s international tax practice in Richmond, VA, which remains successful today.
Beyond client service, Mike has played a strategic role in leadership development and succession planning. As CFO, he designed a deferred compensation plan that impacted more than 2,500 partners, and he was an influential voice in the firm’s CEO selection process. He has mentored countless professionals and executives, and has identified and placed numerous candidates in senior leadership and board roles across industries.
Mike earned a Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University and a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from California State University.
